I have a 1988 ranger automatic with the 2.9 and it idles perfekt on P and N but ones i put it in any gear it runs good for maybe 15 seconds or so then it starts boging down and when i press the gas a little it goes up again and then the cycle continues. It also wont run properly at different speeds what's wrong?

Keep your mind like an umbrella, it only works if its open... Continually learning.
I'm not sure, but the TCC valve can cause this if its stuck.

Is there any way to check if the TCC Valve is stuck or do i need to remove it to check?

Are you getting a check engine light? If yes... did you pull trouble codes?

Sounds like maybe your IAC might be sticky or inoperative. Try cleaning it.

The check engine light comes on and off ocasionaly but i don't have a reader to pull the codes and neither does the dealership. I was also thinking cleaning the IAC because it runs great at higher rpms but when you let go and start braking it bogs down and tries to die

Could be many things. You should get a code reader, they are not expensive but find the right one (obd1 for this year Ford). Check all components you are not sure about, including wiring, such as IAC, throttle position sensor, manifold air pressure or mass airflow sensor, injectors, ignition electronic module, condensor, coil, ignition wires, plugs, fuel pressure regulator, O2 sensor and finally the ECU, check inside whether the capacitors may be leaking. Assume ignition timing and intake butterfly valve are set properly. Good luck! Hey do.

Have you tried replacing the idle control valve and checking for vacuums leaks?

I had an idling issue with my 91 ranger (manual) it didn’t like to idle or stay running. I ended up changing tithe coolant temperature sensor and other sensor on the left side of the thermostat housing and for some reason that fixed the problem. But each issue is unique and there are alot of variables make sure your grounds are grounded and have goood electrical connections. Check idle control valve and look for vacuum leaks. Best of luck. More details of when the problem started and what exactly is going on will help us guys on the forum diagnose the problem
