I’m looking to rebuild a 4.0 in a Ranger, but I’m wondering about mixing 2 engines to make one, and if it will work. I have a 94 4.0, but it was it was in a pretty hard wreck, and I believe the block may be cracked. I was wondering if I could take everything from the 94 engine except the crank, timing gear, and oil dipstick tube and put it into a 97 block.

Or would it be better to source another 94 block?

I’m wanting the 97 block bc it has more strengthening gussets and thicker oil pan rails to prevent NVH.

I'd be slightly nervous about not taking the crank - it was balanced for the rods/wrist pins/pins it was originally built with and while the parts should be pretty close in weight, if you're off, it will take the bearings out in no time...

That leads me to believe my “guts” will fit into the 97 block.

And that leads me to believe that a 96 crank will fit and not have the notch that can cause it to get out of time, and will instead have a key way.
