Have 94,95,97 splash rangers. My 94 std. has a sick engine, and thought to install a bolt-in engine with more power. (no turbos, inasmuch as do not want to remove the AC), in any event, although we have a full race engine shop, cannot tie up equipment to build an engine, so salvage yard will be my source. What higher hp engine will bolt in?

Your 1994 computer/spark system will also want 1989 to 1994 2.3l block with hall effect crank sensor
1995 and up 2.3l or 2.5l were different

In essence, what you are saying, the best way for me to add some more power is to probably rebuild my 94 engine with a few improvements as opposed to being able to just bolt in a later block. Did not want to get into that, although we are an engine machine shop. Just trying to take the easy way out.
Thanks for the info.

2.3l SOHC Lima has some power adding options:

Yes, as said the 1989-1994 2.3l used EEC-IV 60-wire computer with Hall Effect Crank sensor
1995-2001 2.3l/2.5l used EEC-V 104-wire computer and VR Crank sensor
So the engines front cover is different
