My theory is the spring usually rusts away and falls off at some point because it was not zinc coated and is just plain uncoated steel. Then because the spring is not there, the spring on the emergency brake pedal does all the work and then that too fails. Then the nut on the adjusting rod is usually rusted solid and by the time you read the factory manual you find out the system is designed to stretch and only has so much adjustment before it is toast.

Then you start to think, why didn't I just use an Aerostar handle in the middle of the floor because I never had problems with the three I owned.
