Electrical Trade Schools in NY

Anyone know of an Trade schools that have Electrician training located in NY? I don't want to go to college for it, because there's so much other stuff that I would have to take in college that I wouldn't need as opposed to just going to the trade school and learning what I need to know. Only problem is.. I can't find any in NY.

I can tell you this. If you don't show the initiative to go to college, you will rely on simple luck forever. Those that DO take those classes "they don't need" will always get the job first.

Actually, after talking to the people at the organization that I would want to work at, they prefer trade school students instead of college students because those that went to trade school spent the entire time studying what they will be doing on the job, as opposed to spending part of your time in school doing that.

Good luck then. I hope you stay with that one organization. The IBEW prefers those with degrees. My brother found out after 5 years working. He is in college now.

Fine. Know of any good colleges that have classes for becoming an electrician and what exactly are these classes called?

Community colleges are normally good enough. Depending on the county yo live in they should have people that will talk to you beforehand and help you put together a curriculum. If you want to go a bit fancier I think SUNY Alfred has an electrical program since they are more of a trade based school.

I was actually looking at that college last night, and my guidance counselor mentioned them a few times. They seem pretty decent. Now I just have to think about getting in..

Alfred is a GREAT school too. I would go there. I will be starting law school at University of Buffalo soon. I have a friend or two at Alfred and they love it. you learn much more intricate stuff than you will learn being the newbie on the crew working. Alfred is more hands-on than many schools too. Still a good deal of book-worming but you get the idea.

Thing is.. I never took the SAT because I was extremely sick and bedridden, like I have been the past week. Just got well enough to go camping. How big of a problem is that going to be? I hear that colleges wont even bother with you if you don't take it.

Many SUNY schools will still allow you to take the entrance exam. They are fighting to keep as many students as they can fit right now.

I am actually starting at Alfred in 10 days for Automotive Service Technology , they do have an electrician program at the wellsville campus , i have seen it myself , and last time i checked most SUNY schools , except maybe brockport or geneseo , don't have an enterance exam , at least i didnt have to take one , and alot of the state schools and community colleges don't require you to have taken the SAT

Perhaps placement exam would have been better. you have to take it unless you are exempted by your high school transcripts, meaning you did well in high school.

Anyway, here's an update.

I'm planning on attending SUNY Delhi in NY either next year, or the year after. I may decide to take a year off to save up some starter cash, since I do not want to live on campus. I hear they have a good program there for Electrical Construction and Instrumentation which part of the reason why I chose them, but the real decision maker was that it's close to home. I won't be commuting because it's still too far away for that, but I would hopefully be able to find an apartment close by. I think I would try to move over there before I go if I do take the year off, so I can get a stable place of residence and a stable job in the area.

Good to hear!! Consider that living on campus makes life convenient. College requires many many visits to campus offices.

Yes, but I would be living in one of the "Approved and Suggested" apartments nearby, the college provides a list of available places for people who wouldn't want to live on campus.
