I can't seem to find anything about this .

Please remember, my service career was long ago, when the EGR valves first arrived they caused all manner of poor running and seriously tanked the fuel economy .

To disable the EGR all I needs do is un hook the vacuum hose .

Has anyone else tried this ? .

Any downsides ? .

Yes, I have tested the EGR valve and it works perfectly .

I'm getting a very light vacuum signal to the vale at hot idle .

TIA,

I do not like EGR valves either. But when they went to fuel injection the computer looks to see if it's working. If it's not, the computer will then usually retard the timing a little bit to prevent detonation. So it actually may hurt fuel economy, you will have to try it and see. If you could "tune" it out, it would be better.

Its probably better to be self deprecating than self defecating.
Yeah.. losing the egr will reward you with a motor that doesn't run exactly right as well as decrease fuel efficiency.

Tuning it out likely won't be super easy either.. as its a Federally mandated emissions deal and the EPA has been cracking down HARD on tuners.

I'll be able to tune mine out via tweecer... but thats more or less a complete piggy back ecu, more complicated and more capable than one of the simple plug-in units.

THANK YOU ! greatly appreciated .

I'm familiar with EGR valves screwing up the engine performance in carburated engines and fuel injected Diesel engines, I was hoping the same here, guess not .

The EGR system is strictly for emissions, don't let anyone tell you they are "good for the engine" and "good for fuel economy". But when they design and tune the whole engine around it having EGR, then yes it will sometimes run worse with it disconnected.

They inject exhaust gas into the engine to take up space, since it's not air or fuel. This cools and slows the combustion in the engine and this creates less Nitrogen Oxides, which are known to be a pollutant. One good thing, they do turn the EGR off under wide open throttle. The bad thing is they are prone to getting dirty and leaking. If they leak enough at idle, the engine will keep stalling.

Thanx, All ! .

As far as I can tell it's not leaking at idle and when I apply even a small amount of vacuum to it the engine stumbles and wants to die .

Maybe I'll just disable it and see how it goes .

My buddy has a Viper with this engine and he used an EGR block off plate , says he can tell it runs better but the CEL remains on , I don't care as long as it doesn't hurt anything .
