EEC Tuning Options

Hey guys. Just got my truck back with the new motor installed and now want to dyno tune it.

New to this so be gentle with me please...

It is a 1991 Ranger with a 4.0 and a manual transmission. What are you suggestions for a tunable EEC-IV ?

You have an OBD1 PCM, your not going to be tuning it. What you can do is source an out of production PCM piggyback CHiP, Hypertech or Jones Electronics Technology makes (JET). I would contact them first and see what they can do for your, otherwise you are in the second hand market.

A solution for improved timing is to have a custom reground cam cut with timing advance built in; however the stock engine doesn't require much more timing than is recommended by Ford.

Depending on the miles on this engine, it may be worth your time to pop the valve covers and inspect it's rockers, pushrods and rocker arms, to insure that they are sevicable. This valve train is non-adjustable and performance efficiency suffers increasingly as it's component wear.

New, hardened cup rockers are available from Delta Camshaft of Tacoma Washington. Both custom length and adjustable pushrods are available from Smith Brother's.

If you want to tune, probably your best bet will be something like a Microsquirt/Megasquirt or one of the other newer stand-alone aftermarket solutions. The EEC-IV/OBD1 systems are not very modifiable without out of production stuff that has to be specifically dialed in to your exact specs, then you can’t change anything that affects those specs without re-programming the chip. IMHO, far better to just bite the bullet and get something that you can adjust yourself as needed if you’re going to go down the performance rabbit hole.
