ECU question (1992 Mazda B2200 Sport fuel injected)

Though I have read on a few forums that people have replaced their ECU... I have not read that anyone suggests performing specific tests BEFORE installing the ECU.

The reason I am concerned is that I received back an ECU that stated that the solenoids/relays must have a resistance value of no less than 20 ohms or it could damage the ECU.

I called Mazda about this and they seemed clueless, but... they said that they do perform tests on the connector to see if there are any shorts, etc. prior to installing the ECU (so I assume this is probably what it is).

Mazda also said that they MUST reprogram the ECU after it is reinstalled for it to function properly.

No where have I read that this is necessary.

Mazda said that they charge $99 to 'reprogram' the ECU and if they have to diagnose it after that it would be an additional $99.

Does this seem correct or are they doing things that are unnecessary?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have never heard of anything like the relay resistance value. Your ECM won't need programmed because it's a ROM style flash memory. It CAN'T be reprogrammed. The information is burnt into it and that's it, it's in. There is a little bit of regular memory in there for fuel tables and such, but no programming on the 92.

What exactly is your issue. Why are you replacing the ECM?

Yes... I have talked with AvPro (they repaired my ECU) since I posted here originally and Nick told me the same thing and that Mazda did not know what they were talking about when they said that the ECU had to be 'reprogrammed' after it was reinstalled (as if it had firmware that had to be flashed).

I have not installed it as yet, but I had all kinds of rough running problems and the engine check light was on.

I replaced the Mass Airflow Sensor, engine temperature sensor, and now the ECU so hopefully this will resolve the problem.

It had been running beautifully and then all at once it was hard to start and keep running, no power, etc., etc.

Thanks again for posting and I'll post back one-way-or-the-other as to whether it fixes the problem or not.

Well starting in 95 or 96 you do have to flash a new PCM when it's installed, and some younger techs, advisers, and parts guys don't know that before the OBDII break you can't program them like that.
