Other than diff strenght, which is stronger? Housing, etc.

For a BroncoII with 2.8L and 33" traction tires.

It looks interesting to have avalaible lower gear ratios and bigger brakes, but having a 2.8L I don´t know if it worth.

With what you're running right now, I'd say you just stated the only reasons to switch...

Both the 7.5 and the 8.8 run 28 spline axles, as is the small 9", 28 spline, only two benefits, bigger brakes and larger gear selection

Spider gears tend to be a weak spot on 7.5s. The 8.8" is generally a better swap into a RBV than a 9" though (especially if you use an Explorer 8.8")

Explorer 8.8's are 31 spline, but a 9" is FAR stronger and a bigger aftermarket.

I disagree... A 31spl 8.8" is stronger than a stock 28spl 9"... I would much rather have an 8.8", than a 9" underneath... If only the aftermarket would give the 8.8" the attention they gave the 9"...

IIRC the 9's found in trucks/fsb's with a 400 or bigger got a 31(?) spline 9.

The axle tubes fron the 31 spline 9 are the same size (od) as the 31 spline sploder 8.8s. No clue about actuall material thickness.

The 9's great cause you can get thirds built and then install. A guy on ebay will gear, and lock an aftermarket 3rd for around 600 bucks. That's parts AND labor.

If you brake an axle on the nine, it's just pulling the drums, 4 bolts, and yank the shaft right out.

But answer me this my friend, are you turning into a junkie?

Have you bought tools you wouldn't need for anything but extreme automotive work?

Do big rocks or bottomless mud pits make your balls tingle?

Have you ever just wondered what a set of 44s would cost?

Do pinion brakes excite you?

Does gear reduction make you smile?

Have you thought the transfer case is one of the best inventions in the history of man?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions, you might be a junkie.

4x4Junkie is already on the 12 steps to recovery. The first step is admitting you have a problem. His SN is his confession. The second is admitting there's a higher climb, I mean power. I'm still battling this disease every single day. Day in and day out I drown my coil packs in the sorrow that is mud. And the bumps in my life are nothing but bolders it seems. I need to check into the Henry Ford Clinic.

Wow. I'm drunk.

But really, be light, don't blow shit up and just save yourself the money and effort of throwing a 14 bolt in. (Might have to groove the roads if you're only runnin 33s.)

When you're confident in your skills after a rear swap, tackle a front with a D60 or somethin beef.

I regret going half tons. At least with leafs goin to tons will be easy.

Either way, good luck.

Huh. If you go by what LittleBigFoot asks, then I don't just need a 12 step program, I need to be in a 1/2 way house, under constant watch. :D "How much DO a set of 44s run?" In Boggers- around $1475, not counting mount, balance, and tax. 14 Bolt rear. Nah. One day the Mudhound WILL have Volvo portals, with cable actuated lockers, thank you. "Have you thought that the transfer case is one of the best inventions in the history of man?" HELL YEAH, but it needs lower gearing at times, hence the reason for my doubler hanging on the back of my Bulldog 4 speed. "Pinion brake". Uh-uh. Mount mine on the doubler for even better effect, thank you.

Extreme engine tools? Yep. My own valve and seat cutting equipment, rod balancer, and flycutter for those pesky valve reliefs in the pistons. I have more....

Oh. I forgot to answer wether or not gear reduction excites me. YOU do the math: 6.58 LOW on the Bulldog, 2.46 in the doubler, 2.48 in the Xcase, and, for now at least, 4.10s' in the axles.

Lol, that was pretty good.

Mud doesn't do anything for me, but a good rocky trail?

I disagree... A 31spl 8.8" is stronger than a stock 28spl 9"... I would much rather have an 8.8", than a 9" underneath... If only the aftermarket would give the 8.8" the attention they gave the 9"...
+1

Aftermarket parts will allow you to build a 9" stronger than you can build a 8.8", but stock for stock (even with the same spline count), they are much more the same than different. Depending on how it will be used, each has some minor advantages over the other however.
