Here's an interesting find on my Ranger today. 2000 XLT Supercab 4x4 3.0

Background: I got the truck from the previous owner, in trade. Not running, been sitting for (3) years. 3.0 with bad head(s) etc. etc.

So far I've redone everything but the bottom end, discovering each failed/failing part and system I as go.

I've noticed a leak in the pinion seal, but figuring it wasn't urgent it has just now made it to my 'list'. Today I pulled the driveshaft and flange and found this: There are TWO seals in the pinion. 1 attached to the flange and the other in the housing where it ought to be.

Clue #1: Pinion nut spun right off with the 1/2" drive.
Clue #2: I put the claw puller onto the flange and it pulled off while I was finger-tightening the center bolt.
Clue #3: Leaked like a sieve when I pulled the flange.

I have no idea how this axle made it this far - I've put around 1500 miles on the truck, in fact my buddy drove it full loaded from Denver to Phoenix straight through. It actually didn't start leaking until the Scottsdale heat (108+ last week) started taking it's toll).

Ford tough.

If I'm missing something and anyone thinks that certain models should have double seals, let me know. Otherwise, this one goes back into the long list of issues thanks to the previous owner.

I'm going to put it back together and keep an eye on that axle, likely there is some damage there that I'll be addressing soon.

I have a feeling that the seal replacement may not solve my leak. There is probably some pretty heavy wear internally. I'll post here when I'm done.

Just thought I'd share - I've never seen this one before. Ideas, feedback, and if I'm way off - let me know, I appreciate it.

My credo
I didn't ask for your life story, just answer the question!
The one on the flange is more of a dust/ dirt shield then a seal.

Yeah, that plastic dust shield isn't so much an "interesting find" as it is standard issue.
