Dont even know how to buy exhaust.

Im trying to put a cat back system on my truck with a flowmaster 40 series muffler. I want to do 2 Inch in, 2 1/2 inch out, but i dont know how to buy the certain pipe that i need. I drive a 98 ranger XLT, 4.0 v6, stepside, 5 speed manual

Ok, I am making assumptions about your knowledge and abilities based on the content of your only post here so far.

My suggestion would be find and purchase said desired Flowmaster 40 series muffler. Then set it in the bed of the truck and take them both here:

Tell them what you want, and leave, let them take care of the rest. Exhaust shops are often equipped to custom bend pipes that would otherwise be unavailable. I had a car years ago that the previous owner had removed the cats from and then bent up a custom dual system. By the time I got the car the exhaust was shot and the laws had changed so that the cats had to be there for state inspection. I took it to the Monro up the street from where I worked, with whom we had an account, and got the whole system remade with new mufflers and cats, for just a few hundred dollars. I don't remember the exact price anymore, but the two cats and mufflers I needed (I wanted to keep the duals) were like 3/4 of the bill, so labor and pipes weren't that expensive.

I agree with adsm08. Most of us, including licensed mechanics like myself, let muffler shops run exhaust. They have the hoists and custom benders to do it right. Buy the muffler you would like installed, point where on the truck you'd like it to exit and leave it with them.

I enjoy making my own exhaust, but I have a horizontal bandsaw, vertical bandsaw, TIG & MIG welders. I buy mandrel bends and cut/weld it up myself. I end up with a nice product, but I also end up with more time and money in it than I would if I took it to a shop.

I do nearly 100% of my exhaust work, it is not any cheaper or better than a pro shop. And it takes months verses days.

It is a fight to get the old crap apart. Then it is a fight to get the new stuff to seal... just no fun.

Alternately you can NOT choose an arbitrary inlet and outlet size for your muffler and save up the money for a complete integrated system from someone like Gibson....

Then the only issues you have to deal with is cutting the old system into sufficiently small pieces to make them easily removed and disposed of...

I do all my own exhaust, but it's really not worth it unless you can't afford to pay for it. I am well renowned in my parts for puffy dirt filled eyes, burned wrists, and crotchless coveralls (with burn marks and a limp). All side effects of doing exhaust without a lift. I also have the luxury of having a lot of scrap haulers in my immediate family so I can pick and choose bends from a large pile behind my shop because I'm a cheep skate with room to hoard. Don't be like me, have a shop do it

I used to do my own exhaust. Now unless I'm really in a bind, I take it up to the local muffler shop (independent shop that can do hot rod exhaust) and let them handle it. After watching them with it, I realized it's money well spent. They can bend up a new exhaust using a stick rule and smudge marks from their gloves, no joke.

Sawzall seems to work. I'm pretty spoiled these days. I have a 2 post lift in the shop behind my house.

I bought a Magnaflow catback with dual outlets meant for my 2011 and installed it myself no problem.

It droned too much for my liking, so I bought a Magnaflow resonator afterwards and cut the pipe before the muffler and spliced it in. Took the edge off the sound nicely, but it still burbles.
