Simple question out of curiosity, is there a thermostat on the 5r44e that stops fluid from going through the cooler until a certain temperature?

If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you have an electrical problem
Why yes there is. And if you take the spring and put it on the other side of the valve and assemble it the valve will be pinned open and disable thermal cooler by pass.

Most electronic automatics do have a thermostat. The ones in the Bordeaux transmissions are very cold though. According to Ford, the 5R series trans fluid is considered "at temp" for the purposes of checking the level at only 75* or so, compared to about 177 for the 6R and 6F series.

Interesting. I asked because I was checking the trans temp gauge and noticed it would climb to 165, then drop slightly, and repeat. I figured this had to be because of some type of thermostat.

Probably is.

And just because the check temp is low doesn't mean that's the final operating temp, its just the ideal temp to check the fluid at.
