The new oil pump I bought has a different oil pickup, which is not a problem. The main problem is my 2002 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0L V6 oil pump slot for the drive shaft rotates with the shaft. The other version the slot is fixed and doesn't seem to have a way to grab the shaft.

Has anyone replaced the version on the right? How do you remove the shaft (feels very tight)?

There is no clip it just pulls out, yes it can be tight

The reason for that is you don't want it to pull out of the pump, accidentally, when you service the distributor or Cam Synchronizer

You can get a new oil pump shaft for $7

As long as the depth of the oil pickup is the same its OK
