I'm doing a clutch job on the '89 and because I had to cut the line I figured I'd just replace the master cyl as well. I was at the junkyard yesterday and came across a '94 that had a relatively new master cyl and line, so I grabbed that. Now I'm seeing that '89 - '91 seems to be a different part from '92 - '94. But is it? Or is there some tiny difference that won't really matter from a practical standpoint. Yes, no, maybe???

One other thought.... I see that the pedal box is different for the same range of years specified above. Could I put the '94 pedal box in a '89? Might there actually be some benefit to that?

The quick connector for the slave is different, so it won't fit, which is the big deal unless you want to change the slave, lol

I think you need 1991 or earlier quick connect

As far as the clutch pedal assemblies, they are different and not interchangeable
I think, and stress the "think" part, they break down like this:
1983-1987, Gen 1
1988, a 1 year part
1989-1990, might be 1989-1992, Gen 1.5
1991-1994, might be 1993-1994
1995-2011, there seems to be a break point at 2006 but I think these years are interchangeable

The problem you can run into is that Ford of didn't always change specifically by Year, they used what they had until they ran out and then used the new design, you run into this with all car makers

Neither here nor there for the OP but '88 clutch pedal was a 1 year part. It had the switch that slid on the pushrod like the later ones but used the same potmetal die cast bracket and brake pedal as the 83-87's. The clutch pedal was bent/shaped very differently though.

I already have the new slave, and just now checked to make sure I got the right one. I did, so I guess I'll be sticking with original spec parts. FWIW, it's spec'd as '88 - '92.

Off I go now to order the correct line.

Thanks for the input.

Why would you need to R&R the transmission to replace the clutch master cylinder?

Just pull the pin and switch the line.

You don't really think you get away with just master cylinder do you?

Not sure the context of your question. The transmission is already on the ground. New clutch and slave already in-hand.

Right, that's my likely plan. But from what I've read it's all but impossible to replace the line with the MC in place and not introduce some air, so it seems best to pull the MC even if the original goes back in.

Where are you located?

I make a pin pusher and do it.

It's always a kick in the booty to bleed....

Maybe I am just lucky.

I usually get them on the 1st or 2nd try, I just hate the bleeder valve though. Why could they not make it maybe an inch longer and with a normal bleeder nipple on it so I can put a piece of clear tubing on it and a wrench at the same time????

You can make an air bleeder with clear tube connected to a funnel, funnel needs to be raised above slave, and hose does not technically need to be clear, lol

Attach hose to open bleeder put some fluid in the funnel
Push down clutch(or brake) pedal and any air is pushed out, hold pedal down to let air bubble up to funnel, then let up on pedal and fluid, not air, will be sucked back in
Repeat as you see fit
