So I have decided to go a different direction then previously thought. I am doing a 353 Detroit Diesel in an 88 Ranger still with the solid axle swap.

The engine
Detroit diesel 353 silver. Found them currently saving up for one with low hours and with a turbo and blower on it.

I am on the search for jakes also.

Bellhousing
Sae 3 to nv4500

The transmission
Nv4500
If I dont find one with the 1.25 inch diameter 10 spline input shaft I will have to change it out.

Transfer case
Undecided
Possibly a np205 if I find one with the correct splines and size input.

Drive shafts
Will need to be made

Exhaust
Straight pipe.

Alternator
Isuzu NPR with vacuum pump on back

Axles
8.8 31 spline
Dana 44 wagoneer

Or dana 60's already cut down for a wrangler. I have to measure them and see if they are wide enough.

Lift
4-6 inch coils up front (F250)
Leafs in back
3inch body lift to fit engine under hood.

Rewire
24v

Starter
Air starter

From what I read the tooth count is the same on a 353 and 453.

The front end will flip open like a semi tractor but I may have to make the bumper flip with the rest of the truck.

Hopefully the end product will be a mix of

I wish you well, I thought about doing this with mine as there was a 3-53 nearby for cheap. Until I saw the weight. But the F250 springs hopefully will help you out there. I love the sound of the 2-stroke Detroits. They had a dozer at a steam show once with two 6-71s. The dozer was split down the middle the long way with an engine and track drive on each side. The glorious noise coming from that thing made it hard to stand up! On the other hand I'm glad I didn't have to spend 8+ hours per day operating it either. I haven't given up on putting one in a pickup just think I'll use something bigger. I'll be watching this!

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

Pj might still want that 2.9...... it may have 4.0 pistons in it. The guy I got the truck from wasn't sure . He drove out to Iowa to get it. I officially made 50 dollars buying the truck after scraping the cats. Paid $750 for the truck and an 5.0 exploder chassis. Sold that whole chassis the 5.0 rear everything.... for $650 and the cats for $150.
