I didn't quite know where to put this? so feel free to move it, and my apologies.

Looking for a decent, budget, camcorder.

Mainly looking to get footage of local 1/8th mile track racing with it.

Being capable of utilizing an external mic and having good definition at night while zoomed in on the finish line are #1. Ideally <250$, from a brand anyone would recognize.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
DJI or GoPro. My stuff is all GoPro. But I have operated a little DJI thing that is fun and very capable. It has a built in gimbal. When I run it for him, I just use it as is. He normally connects it to his phone so he has a better viewing screen. I think he also puts an external mic on it.

Giving my truck more money than it deserves.
I know this may not be super helpful but I'd just go with whatever is available on fbmp or craigslist if you care about budget. I'd suggest looking for ones with big optical zoom and external mic capabilities...

IDK if you can hook up a mic to a DLSR but usually they're a good bet for video because they have good glass and sensors.

I know cannons line of small digital cameras has a few models with very good video resolution. Maybe just go for I Best Buy and look at the videos specs on cameras.

I don't ever think of marketplace or Craigslist for things other than vehicles and crap like that for the most part lol, good suggestion.

Yeah, checking out their website would be a good idea.

I have a cannon SX620HS. It’s real nice for a digital camera and I think video is 1080p, next step up is 720 model, only difference is it records in 4K.

Has a built in mic, don’t think it will do external, but has a thread for tripod on the bottom.

What I really like about it, it’s got an app that you can use to pull photos and videos directly from the camera to a phone or computer. The camera generates a WiFi signal that you connect you phone or laptop/desktop to.

That would be another nice feature as well come to think of it... being able to transfer the files to my phone/steamdeck through Bluetooth/wifi. There's a handful of different editing software on the deck I'd like to mess around with at some point.
