dead flywheel

Apparently my flywheel has a deadspot....
The starter will not engage when near this spot, it just spins until I rotate the crank by hand

I've tried adjusting the starter but it didn't improve
:annoyed:
So.....I'm looking at pulling the motor to change the flywheel ( and while its out I'll do a complete gasket and seal job)

Or maybe I'll just drop in another motor.....maybe a built up n/a 2.3?

Opinions, ideas and options would be appreciated

sounds like you got a flat spot on the flywheel teeth but i sure dont know why you'd pull the engine for that. Just remove the trans and buy a new flywheel- autozone has one for 70.00. and while your in there change the clutch and bam.. all better. :icon_thumby: Trust me, pullin the trans is alot easier than dealing with all the wires and sensors to pull the engine for a flywheel.

if you put another engine in then you gota find another trans, wiring harness, possible motor mounts so keep that in mind.

I had one of those once.. Luckly it was a stick-shift. For about two years I just parked on an incline EVERY time I shut it off. If the starter didn't ingage I just let her roll and popped the clutch.
Oh yeah, it was a 70 model Scout.

pull the trans, pull the flywheel, and buy a new ring for it

I've durasparked the motor...so no sensors to worry about.

I'd rather pull the motor cause I was gonna do all the gaskets anyways and it would be much easier.

The clutch was changed just before I bought the truck....no need to change it just yet ,

And o'reillys employee discount gets me the flywheel for $35

I just did a flywheel and the rear oil seal while was was there; the clutch and pressure plate are fairly new and looked great, so I left them.

My only suggestion is to have a good transmission jack to make it go smooth and save lots of time. They are worth the rental; fast and safe. Those Harbor Freight jacks aren't very good and using muscle is the hardest of all.

Of course if you were planning on pulling the engine anyway, this is a good excuse. But you will have to align the transmission anyway.
