Dash lights not illuminating

Well with the connector unplugged... that's a good reading. Meaning voltage is getting there.

However it would not drop the voltage across the dimmer until it was a completed circuit.

If you connect the cluster and then backprobe the terminal... that woul tell you what amount of voltage is left to illuminate the cluster lamps.

You can also test the dimmer variable resistor with an ohm Meyer. Roll the dimmer while connected both ways and should increase one way and decrease the other.

Can I ask - what book is that? It looks pretty comprehensive!

The images are from a Ford manual, called an Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual, commonly called an EVTM.


I get them from eBay. Here's one listed now, and a quick scan of the ad said that the seller ships international.

I missed that you had replaced the switch... but we have a saying here... New just means untested.

It only takes a minute to test it... then you'll know.

And I will check the voltage again with the plug in situ. I THINK I already did, but I can no longer be sure...!

This is now sorted, thanks for your help and patience. Now to trace the parasitic power drain, so I don't have to keep disconnecting the battery...
