My credo
it is what it is
is there any difference beside the size of the carrier along with ring &pinion in a d61 as opposed to a regular d60? if not then im assuming a regular d60 master overhaul kit will work (bearings shims etc.)?

I read somewhere to look out for the 61s because they suck for some reason. I can't remember why or how.

from what ive read they are stronger. the only big difference is the size of the carrier and ring and pinion to accommodate for taller gearsets (fuel economy on older vehicles). theyre 35 spline shafts as well unless coarse spline

When I first did my Sas , I got a rear 61. The pinion is offset to allow lower gear ratios, and they have the same axle shafts as a Regular rear Dana 60

Yes, my install kit worked in the 61. Just my ring and pinion wouldn't. Axle shaft were the same also

ok did some research on pirate4x4. the 61 has .404" more offset than a regular 60 from the pinion. if the bearings are the same size for the carriers shouldnt i be able to use a regular 60 carrier/detroit full locker, regular 60 thick cut gears 456 &lower, and have a spacer made to make up the difference (or a little less than the difference allowing for shims)?

Their a thread on pirate about someone doing the same thing, I didn't because I had a buddy who sold me a Dana 60 for $50. But I looked into the same thing about getting a spacer made up.
