If I break an axle shaft on my D28 will the tire fall off? I do not have experience with the D28 or D35. I know on the D44 TTB you can break a shaft and the tire will stay put. I have done that a few times.

No. The wheel mounts to the brake rotor, which is attached to the spindle. The spindle is bolted to the steering knuckle.

The locking hub slides over the wheel studs behind the wheel. The axle shaft goes through the spindle into the locking hub. If the axle breaks, it stops turning the locked hub and wheel.

What Jim said.

Since you have experience with the D44 the easiest way to explain it is this.

The D28 and 35 are basically the same axle as the D44 built with smaller parts. They just have a different arrangement for the bearing retaining hardware behind the hub.

Thanks. That is what I was assuming, just wasn't sure. I was just making sure I could still drive home after breaking an axle on the trail because I know I will
