Cummins swap done, need tach signal help

The truck is an 02' 2wd with a 4bt. It's a runner and driver now and I have every gauge working except the tach.

When I got the truck it didn't have a motor so I am looking for some help on how the original setup worked and if I can use the original Ranger tach. The 4bt does not have a tach sensor on the harmonic balancer like the 6bt does.

From what I gather the Ranger tach operates off the ECM...but what language the tach understands is what i am trying to figure out. I can install a sender that works off a magnetic pickup on the alternator or another rotating source if I can determine what type of signal the factory tach reads. I used a dakota digital box for the speedo and I think they might have one for the tach that would work out too.

Most tachs run off a duty cycle that is run from the ignition pulse.

I can't get at the wiring diagrams and shop manuals right now, but a sunpro unit has power all the time, then gets it's ground from the coil ground, and receives a duty cycle ground as the coil ground is engaged and disengaged.


On an 02 the PCM monitors a voltage signal generated by a variable reluctance sensor. I imagine it then translates that to the duty cycle for the tach motor to run at, producing the needle position.

Look into the Dakota Digital DSL-1 or DSL-2 (same controller, the DSL-2 comes with a pick-up that will screw into most Cummins bellhousings adapters.)

Thanks for the help guys!! I will give dakota digital a call on Monday and ask them a few questions. Their box worked fantastic for the speedometer and I love how adjustable it is when re-gearing or switching tire size.

I have a DD DSL-2 sitting here waiting for the 4BT to go into my truck. I already installed the pick-up in the bell housing adapter. I know for sure it will work with the flywheel and I'm about 99% sure it will work with the stock tach.

Go over to 4BTswaps.com and search there. Tons of guys have used it on every different application you could imagine.

It is really fun, by far my favorite vehicle. It gets about 33-35mpg on the hwy...who knows what it's getting city because I can't keep my foot out of it.

The factory Tach on ALL EFI rangers is not run off the PCM, but off a specific tach signal from the ignition module. That signal is also sent to the PCM, but it is generated by the ignition module.
