IMO a 1911 is a hard gun to conceal...
but everyone is different, you gotta find one that you like.

Not really, the thinness is actually nicer than a lot of other guns for carry. My G20 or my old 4.5" XDm isn't really much harder to conceal than an XD Sub compact. It's not really until you get into pretty small guns where there's a big difference, like the LCP, LC9, PPS, ect IMO.

Best is entirely subjective, there's about 34587934 options.

The biggest Glock (which is basically 1911 sized and certainly wider) next to the smallest XD. Nothing to write home about. And I actually prefer the longer barrel for carry, it feels more stable while carrying.

i shot and carried a 1911 for a few hours when looking at handguns before buying... and i didn't like carrying the 1911.

But the fact is the height difference is negligible. A standard 1911 is 5.5" tall, an XD sub compact for example is 4.75", 0.75" really doesn't make much difference in concealability. Add grip extension on the XD if you like using your pinky and the difference is an 1/8". A Ruger LCP on the other hand is 3.5" tall, there is certainly a big difference there. And FWIW I just looked up the specs and the G20 is indeed the same height as a 1911.

Now when it comes to weight, there can be big differences and everybody is comfortable carrying a different amount of weight, an all steel 1911 will sure be heavy. My fully loaded G20 is only about 5oz heavier than my XD sub compact fully loaded.

Good to know. :icon_thumby: I'm currently thinking over a 1911 or some variety of XD.

That's the plan. I'm not in a rush though, I won't be getting anything before I move back to Washington at Thanksgiving.
