I will add that you have to be familiar with some of the early stuff also to know when it's ok to pay up for the right piece. Some of this stuff can bring pretty big money.

Always consider any Coleman accessories it may included too. Travel cases... Light deflectors... colored glass...

For sure.

Most of what I am seeing seeing for $75+ now is like 70's-80's 220's/powerhhouse type stuff.

Anything of interest goes up from there...

I think the problem is that I have several different things that I collect, and I am running out of space. (It does not help that if I come home with a lantern, I am reminded that I already have 10+ between Liquid Fuel, Propane, and Iso-Butane.) I also don't want to really pay up for some stuff. People think that a 90's lantern in ok shape should go for $50 or more.

But I still keep an eye out....

But if you need one to use... $50 is like a third the price of a new one at a store so at the end of the day if it is in good shape and works it probably really isn't that horrible.

Yeah...and anything made before the mid 80's is much better quality than anything made today. I have a slight preference towards 70's Coleman lanterns for everyday use because of the tip cleaner spinner... stoves of any vintage are great.

I don't know why y'all are only seeing spendy items. I have sure seen many that I thought were way overpriced but many at yard sales, flea markets, thrift stores for next to nothing. Try putting out a want ad on craigslist - I guarantee that you'll get some responses from people who just want old "junk" out of their shed.

Coleman at garage sales is real spotty, I bought the first vintage Coleman thing at a Thrift store two weeks ago... a cute little red water jug.

Just not a ton of vintage stuff around

I think back in the day everybody here dragged their camper up to the black hills, fried their transmission and they had to pawn their camping crap to get back home.

Best theory I can come up with. :icon_idea:

We live in a throw away society. Rather that try to sell stuff off, especially stuff owned by someone who has passed away, they will just chuck it in the trash.

Yes, I ran into this several years ago. I saved two 20' trailer loads of tools and machinery going into the dumpster. I paid $200 for it all and probably made close to $2,000 and kept all the tools.
I never met the deceased but think of him every time I use one of those tools. I hope he looks down and smiles.

I should clarify, none of the ones I have are really collector quality, mostly newer stuff. About a year after Hurricane Sandy one of the local Walmarts had over 200 Dual Fuel lanterns that they were stuck with. I ended up buying two at $25 each.

The only ones I don't use are two Primus propane lanterns that belong to my dad. The only reason I don't use them is because the globes are hard to source. I have plenty to use if I need to.

I have actually been thinning down my collections of stuff because, frankly, I just don't have the space anymore.

Thrift stores and flea markets by me (NJ) are usually higher priced on items like that because everybody and their brother goes for that stuff, what little there is. I have sadly not had the time to go to garage sales.

In my future, I hope to move to a place that will allow me to have an outbuilding approximately 40x60, with a concrete floor and two post lift, and plenty of room for my junk.

You do realize you won’t have any more room... just more junk.

Having moved from 260 sq/ft of shed to a 1200 sq/ft shop and a 240 sq/ft shed... I can verify that you can fit an awful lot more junk in there.

I'm in a single car garage for now... it's painful. Half my tools and collectables are in a rental 8x28 storage locker 40 minutes away.

I just have to deal for a little while longer...

I went from living in a 12x60 trailer and using the 8x8 “bedroom” for a tool room, now I have a two car detached garage thathas a attic.

Still no room to walk.

that two car garage looked much bigger before I bought it. I think I got jipped.
