Hey y'all, I'm working on overhauling my Dana 35 front end I got from the junkyard and I'm trying to remove the coils. I tried placing a 1 1/16 impact socket on the wrench, but that was to small. I placed a the next size up (1 1/8) and that was too big. Since the 1 1/16 impact socket has 27mm notched into it as well I assumed the bolt must be a 28mm. I went into orilleys and they had every socket size but 28mm. They couldn't even order that size of impact socket supposedly. So what size is this thing? Is it 28mm or am I way off? I guess Ill just order it online if it is but I need to be certain, I really am trying to get my front end done lol. Thanks ahead of time for all of y'alls help!

I used a 1-1/8 line wrench on mine. Was a little loose but worked.

I've used a 1-1/8" wrench on both of my Rangers. Give it some good PB Blaster, let it soak for a few hours, and let her rip with the 1-1/8" socket. They are so big, I would not be worrying about rounding it out.

28mm is not as common a size as they are saying.

I've bought several large metric sockets from O'Reillys, although they're GM brand (and may not work on Ford trucks ;-) ).

I had to get a deep 28mm to get the springs on my Dana 28 TTB. Also borrowed a 28mm combination wrench, which helped a lot.

CountryDriven, any luck?

Nice thing about using the combo wrench is that you can easily add more nuts to the torque via a longer pole. Impact power is mechanically lost through numerous long extensions form the source.

Heh heh, I don't have any air tools. But have lots of pipes and bars, Hammers too. If you can use your foot and leg to push the wrench. Or if space is tight , I use a little jack to break the thread.

I tried the whole deep well thing... 15" crescent is what works for me. Mine locks down well enough and doesn't rattle loose, so it doesn't try and round. Also lets it angle so it can move up the coils as it turns. Granted, I'd much rather use something 6pt, but beggars can't be choosers. Once it's broke free then I use a 1 1/8" deep well on a ratchet with iirc 18" of extension to take it off faster. My bolt is too long for a deep well to bite the whole nut, so the crescent stays on better.

I've always used a 1-1/8" deep socket and a breaker bar with a pipe over it for more leverage. Works every time. I had a 28mm, but it's not a deep socket. I use it on the bottom bolts if I need to take the radius arms off.

I usually soak the nut and threads with PB Blaster the day before I'm going to work on it.
