If the clutch pedal moves to the point of starting the master cylinder pushrod is moving, my first thought is your clutch hose fell off since that would make the pedal hard as a rock but you wouldn't be able to compress it to trip the pedal switch...
Annoyingly I think the master cylinder or slave cylinder exploded, look where might be wet with brake fluid... master cylinder isn't "too" bad but not for the faint of heart, it just requires unhooking the clutch switch on the pedal linkage, breaking the bushing thing going from that to the pedal pin (it's too hard to get in there and get released to save, they come with master cylinders), climb under and release the hose from the transmission, grab the master cylinder and twist it out of the firewall (they're twist lock in '97, no bolts) then fenangle the master cylinder and hose out of the vehicle together. From there you can drive the roll pin out and put the hose on a new master cylinder, bench bleed it (extremely important, several you tube videos on it) then reinstall.
