I bought a 96 2wd Ranger a little while ago. I only push the pedal down about 2-3" total stroke for clutch engagement and disengagement. The previous owner gave me a song and dance that "it's always been like this". I still need to figure out if I need a new clutch pack or not. It shifts, drives, etc nicely once you get used to a very short length of throw on the pedal. I am just concerned that I only have a couple inches of pedal at the top, if this is in fact normal I'd sure like to know. If this is a symptom of "stop driving and get it into a Ford clutch witch-doctor fast", I need that answer too. If you have any insight, please educate me. Thank you in advance.

If you're not having trouble getting it into first or reverse when you're stopped, I would think that it's probably fine and suggest not worrying about it. If it's hard to get into one of those two gears, that is a classic sign of the clutch not releasing completely.... try this, stop somewhere, put the trans in neutral, let the clutch out, push the clutch pedal back in, and see if it goes into first and reverse easily or if there's resistance/grinding... if there's none, no problem.

Thank you so much for the reply. I am not having any issues in any gear per se. I will just accept this as the way it is! Again, thank you very much!
