Who would have guess.. I know im a big boy and should know if there's a specific forum for non RBV tech but it only says "projects" so if its wrong one of you fancy mods feel free to move this and yell at me.

Jeep 4.7 v8. Shows no codes. But randomly (more when it warm) starts running rough. Alternator will not drop below 14.5 volts and even spiked to 15 no matter how long it runs. When the rough running starts the relays in the engine power box start going insane. Clicking on and off rapidly.

Im not dumb, thinking ground wire from the battery but im getting good ohm reading ENGINE OFF. when i start the engine, somehow the ground connection reads poorly from negative terminal to the block.

I am so sick of Chrysler nonsense with wiring. Ive tried just jumping the negative terminal to the block with jumper cables and no effect. Tried the wiggle the wires test. No effect. The relay thats flicking the most is one labeled ASD. no idea what that is but it definitely kills the engine. And yes i put a new relay in...

Thoughts?

First thing I do with a Chrysler is splash it with holy water and recite the shepherds prayer.

Alternator/regulator going out? putting too much juice and causing your Mopar to twitch.

other than that, Sheep herder might be on to something... if that is the case, give it a baptism by pushing it into the nearest lake/ ocean and wash your hands of it.

Well, it is a Chrysler, you might do that anyways to keep your sanity.

Its a 80 year old woman with one foot who lives on disability that owns it. She can barely afford to feed herself. If it was anyone else i would have told them to get it the hell away from me, chryslers have screwed me so much i do not take them anymore normally except stuff like brake jobs .. she is driving my friends car right now to get to and from her doctors and what not.

Gotta do what ya gotta do. Im thinking something alternator too, but i unplugged the alternator it ran fine for a little then started back up. I cant afford to throw parts at it.

Hey now.

They name their products appropriately. Demon, hellcat, hellephant... even ram is satanic in nature.

Heck, GM even tried to build the "exorcist," and I have yet to see one that a demon doesn't kill without issue.

Holy water will just piss it off.

Sacrifice a goat to Baal, build a mighty pyre, and give the hellspawn that walks out of the blaze whatever artifact it asks for.

Your jeep will be fixed.

I love you guys... but hate you all... this thing can't leave till it's fixed or i pay out of pocket to send it somewhere else. I cant let this lady go with the typical Chrysler excuse "your car is haunted leave me alone".

But im not rich so cant throw a parts cannon at it... im charging a old battery i know is good right now and gonna swap that in and quadruple ground it when its ready. After that... im paying for an alternator.

I didn't ask for your life story, just answer the question!
ASD relay = auto shut down. It’s controlled by the pcm and powers the injectors, fuel pump, or some other stuff (depending on the year, model, etc. I didn’t look up the wiring diagram for what you’re working on.) Sounds like that’s a symptom, not a cause.
I’d suspect a bad ground, maybe to the pcm.

What is the purpose of said relay ( auto shut down ). Part of the alarm? Remote start? Never heard of such thing in any other vehicle. Possible to just bypass it and move on? I realize a greater issue exists but knowing more about that circuit would help.

Wtf does auto shut down mean?

Thanks for the help btw.

Auto shut down means your auto has shut down.

Try putting a good battery in it. A bad battery can cause the alternator to put out excess voltage and cause crazy crap with other electronics.

Yeah, I was trying to imagine a scenario where the battery goes open circuit but ti could still crank reliably - not coming up with anything. If you had an o-scope you could look at the system voltage with more than a voltmeter, which usually won't show anything moving quickly.

when i start the engine, somehow the ground connection reads poorly from negative terminal to the block.
This seems like maybe a big clue - how did you measure the ground, and I assume you meant after you started it not while you were running the starter?
