I'm looking to get rid of some of the shiny bits on a car and was curious if anybody has done this with any "do's & don'ts". I'm confident in my skills, just wondering what brands to get/stay away from. 3M is always a good brand, but usually the most expensive. I don't mind spending more for a better product. I don't want to go too cheap and be peeling it off in 6 months. ford charges almost $1500 for a Ranger Blackout, on a truck that already has minimum chrome parts. So I want to do it A LOT cheaper than that. I figure around $150-200 in supplies and my time at $60/per hour @ 2-3 hours of actual work time puts me under $500.

Right now, I'm looking at satin black and/or Carbon Fiber 3D print.

In college I was broke and the black peeled off the lower window trim on my Eclipse, plain old electrical tape held up pretty decent.

One of my assistant managers just did the plasti dip treatment to his Honda.

Typical kid... was in to big of a hurry on the first attempt. I shamed him into re-doing it... even covered part of a shift for him so he couldn't use the didn't have enough time or it was dark. His second attempt turned out much better. I kinda liked it.

Plasti-dip can look good, if you take your time and do it right. I dipped the chrome bumpers and grill on my ‘01 Ranger.

I also plasti-dipped the rims, in case you didn’t notice.

Plasti-dip or the like. I bought the Rustoleum brand to black out my badges and it was super easy and didn't even leave any lines or spots like normal spray paint would. It was black and it just blended in with the plastic black grill. I was shocked by how much it blended in. Anything that is "peelable" is what you need. Avoid the tape products as the sun will cause issues with that... Especially since you are in florida.

No Plasti-dip for me fellas. It peels too easy and does not take the abuse like the tape does. But thanks to all who finally replied. The tape stuff seems more permanent. Thats what I'm going with. I just wanted some opinions on the tapes, not the spray on stuff.

Doesn’t take abuse?! What are you doing, chewing on your trim pieces? Scratching at it with a screwdriver?

I dipped the front bumper and grill on that truck and drove it 150k miles in rush hour traffic in NJ. That means 10-20’ off the back bumper of the car in front of me at 75mph. It got pelted with rocks and sandblasted by other cars daily. When (not very often) I washed it, it looked good as the day I sprayed it.

I had some lady run into the back bumper. It bent and twisted the rear bumper... but never scratched the Plasti-dip off. Which I found kind of weird, it’s supposed to peel off.

If you’re only interested in the tape, that’s perfectly fine and it’s probably easier to use... but don’t for a second think that the spray doesn’t take abuse. I can’t help you with your question, I’ve never used the tape.

Plasti-dip is actually pretty tough. Unless you use alcohol it doesn't come off easy even with a scraper. When I hear tape I just think of adhesive and how it reacts to the sun directly hitting it. Ever used Velcro to hold something down on the dash? It works for about a week and then the sun causes it to get warm and sticky and not hold anymore.... Tape could also shrink with the temp changes.

The tape used in these applications actually use heat to help bond the adhesive, so that isn't an issue. I didnt realize the Plasti-Dip was that durable. I havent had the best luck with it. Usually a little nick and it just peels right off. Could have been poor surface prep on my part though. Also the tape comes in cool patterns like Carbon Fiber and/or Color Camoflauge. I can't do that with a spray can.

I’ve never used the tape, I’m assuming it’s similar to vinyl wrap. If that’s the case, it should work pretty good. Ive used 3m wrap before...
