In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
If they're both the same gear ratio, just swap the whole axle. That's easy.

If they aren't the same ratio... this is where changing parts and setting up a rear end comes into play.

There is also the option of putting a lunch box locker in your existing differential. While not the best choice for a vehicle that lives mainly on the black top... it sure would add to it's off road abilities.

If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
One of my former techs had a 97 Ranger for years and he put a Lockrite unit in it. He drove it 160,000 miles with no problems but it sounded like it was grinding itself to death just driving around the parking lot. I vote for paying someone to swap the Traction Lok diff into your truck.

they are different ratios the 91 (my daily driver) has 3:55 and the 90 (my parts rig) has 3:73 as much as i would like to make the 91 have 3:73 gears i dont have a good front end to swap into it so i want to take the 91's rearend and make it lsd without changing my ratio.

If that's the case, then you would probably be fine with a lunch box locker. You can I stall it yourself without removing the carrier or gears in the diff. I have Aussie brand in mine. My truck gets driven on the road to go to and from offroad trails. It works good for me. You may want to read up them.

I replaced my open diff with a rebuilt Trac-lok and it was pretty easy, just swapped the ring gear over and set backlash.
