I have a 2001 plain jain ranger 2 wheel drive ranger and I'd like to change out the 2.3 4 cylinder engine to a 6 cylinder engine. I imagine the tranny won't bolt up and the electrical won't match, is that true? Will the 6 cylinder fit in my current configuration? I'd like to keep it 2 wheel drive. Any comments suggestions?

You might as well swap in a V8 from an Explorer or Mountaineer, its the same amount of work with much better pay off. there is all kinds of info on motor swaps in the "Hoe to Tech" section https://www.therangerstation.com/how-to/

If you just want a V6 it would be MUCH easier to buy another truck.. It's a very involved process to swap everything over and will require a complete teardown of most of the truck. Swapping nearly all harnesses, etc..

Otherwise, what Ranger850 said.

Welcome to TRS :)

Yes, to all the above
When you change engine size you need to change engine, transmission, wiring harness and engine computer as a minimum, then there is exhaust, radiator, engine and transmission mounts, driveshaft

If you have a 2.3l Duratec engine(not the 4cyl 2.5l) then you have 135 horse power
3.0l V6 was 150HP so not worth it
4.0l SOHC V6 was 200HP, and worth it BUT..................as said you can sell your 2.3l Ranger and buy a Factory 4.0l SOHC Ranger for less than the cost of the swap

5.0l Explorer V8 has 215HP, and is exactly the same work as swapping in either V6, and you can NOT go out and buy a Factory V8 Ranger
