My wife's computer has a Creative Brand CDRW rated 8x4x32x. We are limited on Hard Disk space and were planning to Burn some CD's of a bunch of photos we have. My wife picked up some Memorex CD-R discs, and they are listed as 52x 700mb and 80min and for some reason the Nero software doesn't even acknowledge this media is inserted in the drive, it keeps asking for a disc. The drive does spin up and attempts to look at it but does nothing.

I know that the drive does work because I can put other CD's in it and it reads them just fine?

Some burners don't like certian brands of meda. Try a different brand of Cdr's and it may work. Or you ma have a bad drive that can't read blank cd's. I have seen a few die that way.

Unless it died in the past week I just burned something last week. Does it make a difference if it a CDRW writer and only a CDR disc?

No. It should be able to burn to a cd-r as well. I'm surprised with this as Creative and Memorex are both very reputable companies, and Nero is about as good as it gets when it comes to burning media.

A few things to try:

- Try a disc from the bottom of the spindle.

- If you have easy access to another burning program, try it. Windows XP has a built in burning program (drag and drop) that's very user friendly.

- Try a disc from another brand.

If a disc from another brand works, the memorex spindle may be from a bad batch. In that case, return it to the store, explain what you did, and ask for a refund.

X2...great advice! I use this stuff all the time and Nero is great cd/dvd burning software. I've gotten spindles of 100 with several bad disks per bunch occasionally. Micosoft's drag and drop usually works fine too...but Nero is way better.

You need more ram, you only have 256mb, that's not enough for the burn proof technology in your burner to work. It uses your memory to cache the info before it writes it to the CD. You barely have enough run Windows. Try another 256mb, or better yet, install 1 gig.
