Catalytic converter delete

Yep, new ignition components fixed all the missing. Wouldn’t say I gained power, but it’s nice and smooth now. Surprised I didn’t get a light.

Well the Pick and Pull by my can’t sell catalytic converters. I’ve read that the Feds require used cats to be tested and certified to be sold. So that’s out. Rock Auto has that section of pipe for like $120. Any thoughts as to the cheapest option to get this pipe fixed? Really not too worried about the environmental part, just the noise. I’m sure that rule hurts the environment more than it helps.

Ya I’ve found where I can get just cats, but I am looking for the whole pipe section between the header and resonator section too. That way I can just bolt it up and don’t need to do any cutting and whatnot

Best bet in that case is to hit up an exhaust shop. They will usually make the pipe fairly cheap and just tell them to throw a cheapo universal cat on it. Junkyards can't sell cats, transmission pans, or diff covers by federal law.

Pretty sure Rock Auto sells the cat assembly that bolts in between between y pipe and muffler. its flanged w/ bolts on both ends. My 4.0 ohv is at least.

I have no confirmation of this but I was told it's because people taking trans pans and diff covers off in a junkyard means they are obviously dumping oil on the ground. I can also see it being frowned upon by the people who run/own junkyards as well since once someone takes the pan or cover off no one is going to want to buy the whole diff or transmission now that's it's open and exposed to the elements. Would you rather sell a 5 dollar pan or a 300 dollar transmission?

When I replaced my driver’s side cat, I think it was around $200 from Rock Auto. So far it has worked no problem. Of course, PA is one of the 49 or whatever Federal emissions states. If you have California emissions on your truck, you might be stuck complying to that standard and the extra cost and limitations.

Part of the reason it was so inexpensive is that the core isn’t solid. There is a section before the aft O2 sensor and (at least it looks like) after. I think the OEM was a solid core though out the cat.

Since it’s sold through Rock Auto, I’m sure it’s legal but it might last as long as the much more expensive OEM one should.

Pa is a California “CARB” compliant state, not federal, I do believe.

I know that a lot of junk yards drain all the fluids before storing the vehicles.

I have seen it where the yard will opt to punch a whole in the trans pan instead pulling the pan off to drain. Thus requiring you to byo transmission pan.

PA is not, thank God. Living where emissions testing is required not only by the state but in order for me to get on base to work, things are bad enough without throwing CARB compliance into the mix.

PA is indeed a CARB state. All new vehicles sold in PA need to be CARB compliant since 2008.

They just don't enforce the rules on replacement cats and vehicle modifications like California does. If it has a cat and passes all other test it's fine whether it's an aftermarket universal non CARB cat or an OEM CARB certified cat though legally a grey area to use a non certified cat...

Here in NJ we are also a CARB state but since the only inspection we have is an OBD2 CEL test people do whatever the hell they want since no one is inspecting any aspects of the CARB certification after the vehicle is manufactured. Your car could literally be on fire when you drive up to the inspection station, as long as the scanner shows no codes you pass inspection.

Just have a title, give them tax, and you’re set. You might get pulled over if you’re rolling coal so bad it obstructs the visibility of cars behind you, but that’s about it.

State regs vary wildly on how they handle inspections, pollution standards, and all that but federal regs are pretty simple to remember... Don't screw with the emissions equipment no matter what state you're in.

What Dirtman said. Pennsilvania's clean vehicle program requires all vehicles newer the MY2008 be built to CARB standards, I believe a lot of states are the same and I would be surprised if manufactures offered non CARB versions of their vehicles for sale. They are not 100% CARB compliant in the matter of regular inspections, just requiring to meet the standards when new.
