anyone know of any cat back exhausts for a 89 ranger 4x4 single cab? i tried to order one off summit, but they said they couldn't deliver it to California. something about not being carb compliant? i tried also getting it done at a local shop, but the guy never returned my calls.

California is a C.A.R.B state that requires all exhaust parts to meet their specifications or it's illegal to buy, own, or install. Not many if ANY aftermarket cat back systems will be carb compliant because its a massive headache and its easier for companies to just say "screw california". If you just want O.E replacement parts you can buy the individual peices from walker that will meet the regulations. If you want aftermarket stuff... move...

Yep, you have to make sure the system you want to buy complies with the extra emissions specification required by California. There are two systems, CARB and 49 State complaint. As far as the shop not answering, I have to guess they aren't open because of the COVID19 thing. As to why they would be closed, I won't speculate since it could be due to various reasons.

Flowmaster and Magnaflow are both located in California. The laws here do go beyond what it should be. By a muffler and tip of your choice, and have a shop quote you a price for the piping and installation. Instead of a exhaust kit, have a shop build the whole setup for you.

Another case of people making laws about things they don't understand."Cat back" means all the emissions questions are answered by the components upstream. I bought a 2 1/4" Dynomax tailpipe from Summit for my 93, I had already fabricated the rest of the system. It fits good and looks stock from the outside. Dynomax offers a 2 1/2" system complete with a muffler but it was more money than I wanted to spend.

I didn’t see just a tailpipe option, do you possibly have a link? Or was that a long time ago maybe it doesn’t exist anymore? I’d happily do that and get a magnaflow muffler or something like that.

Ahh. Ty. The one they have for my year is smaller and not as pretty. Lol
But it’s also a 1/3 the price.

I'd be startled if it won't fit your truck, the rear hanger will probably have to be changed. I didn't want a 2" pipe with wrinkle bends because I think it would be too restrictive for the 351.

Try Gibson. They are located in Corona, CA. I had no trouble obtaining a single side swept cat back system for my 2002 extended cab Ranger in 2002. I live in CA. I also had a cat back system for my 89 extended cab STX. I have never had a restriction on getting an exhaust system because I live in CA.

I don't know if Gibson makes a cat back system for single cab but a call to them should let you know. They make both aluminized and stainless steel cat back systems. I went with SS and it is still working without any problems after 18 years and 247K miles.
