Picked up a 1984 Ranger with the 2.8l. Really in good shape....except the running condition. In fact, its all factory original.

It starts up fine....just like my 1983 which runs good. However, once it warms up....the idle gets slower and slower till it dies. Then, have to gently press the gas pedal to start it again. Sometimes, it will shoot a flame out the carburetor.

I’ve swapped carburetors from 1983 to the 1984....same symptoms and problem persists.

I’m getting codes 41 System lean and 13 Idle RPM high.

I’m stumped.....swapping carburetors didn’t help. What’s to do next? Thanks

Have you confirmed the timing?

If timing is right, I don't think a carb will generally back fire (I could be wrong though).

My credo
If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
Lean backfires through the intake, rich backfires through the exhaust. I'd look for vacuum leaks before doing anything expensive.
