My credo
built her in a storage unit
for example i found an m5r1 from the yard that is 2wd and i have the tail housing from another fm146 4x4 can i put the mitsubishi tail housing on the m5r1? or the one from my truck that i actually would like to use that has a manual shift lever.

No, it won't fit/bolt on the other model transmission, transfer case bolt pattern is the same
FM145/6 didn't have a detachable tail shaft housing, like the M5R1, in any case, the main case came in 2WD or 4WD versions, if memory serves, FM132 was 2WD version

2WD transmissions also have a longer tail shaft, in the case of manuals you have to swap the tail shaft as well to the shorter 4WD length for the 4WD housing

On automatics you have to do a full disassembly to swap the main output shaft
