more work than it is worth. It would make more sense to buy a 4x4 trans

If you can rebuild a trans you can do it for about $100, tail shaft and housing need to be swaped.

Heres the next question...how much work would it be to put the 5spd trans off of the 2.9 onto my 4.0...would it work?

Will it fit...yes...will it last long behind the 4.0L...no.

There is more to making the truck a 4x4 than just putting a trans/transfer case in it.

The front 4x4 differential/axle will not just bolt into a 2wd truck. The engine cross members (that the front suspension bolts to) are different and need to be swapped. The cross member is welded/riveted to the frame.

I swaped the crossmember and it was more than I thought. I don't recommend it unless you have the fabrication skills and have alot of time.

It would be much easier to do a SAS on it instead.

Also the 4.0 would demolish the Dana 28 and the TK5 transmission. I had a D28 in my 2.3 ranger and it got destroyed last winter.
