Well....looks like a good sun spot cycle coming up. I could pick you up anytime on 40 or 20m. Q: what plans for an antenna do you have in the works?

No plans for a HAM shack in the immediate future. I do have a TYT TH9800+ quad band Radio and a Diamond CR9800A antenna for mobile and a TYT MD-390 dual band hand held. Mainly for SAR but I do need to find some time to get familiar with working the things. The antenna has already been tuned on the 10, 6, and 2 meters per the instructions. 70 cm has no ability to be tuned. The quad band might be handy for road trips as well since CB doesn't get the traffic it used to.

I need to get a real GMRS radio as well instead of using the Baofeng UV-5R. I want to get a Wouxun KG-1000G for that. It has the best reviews of the higher powered radios and good repeater interaction. And, it's legal for GMRS. (WRCU729)

Once the spring projects get done, I want to start playing on the radios some. See what I can reach at how far and who’s all out there.

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
I started studying to get my ham license a couple years ago. Got interrupted by the divorce. I was almost ready to test for the first two levels. But wanted to learn morse and get that, too. But my brain doesn't do well with that kind of memorization. I need to get studying again.

Morse Code is no longer a requirement. You can learn it if you wish but it will not be part of the license test. I can’t remember if you get a separate certification or if a certification for Morse Code is even required.

I know it’s optional. Just a personal challenge kind of thing.

Oh yea, the CW guys are going hot & heavy, more than ever.

Here is one of my most fun events on ham radio....the ships weekend....https://www.nj2bb.org/museum/

I have one of the (1937) Liberty Ships radio sets. You can hear in service Navy vessels and the old "still floating" ships that served.

Get your ticket here at https://www.hamradiolicenseexam.com/

See yall in the ether, WB1E Doug

KD3YT here. Got my Technician license early 1990, by late 1990 had taken General and Advanced test. Back in the 90's ran a Jnos packet radio BBS. In 2006 moved to present location with room for antennas so now work HF plus VHF/UHF. Been doing alot of FT8 lately due to band conditions.

de N0EGF, did a lot of mobile out of the Ranger over the years. Best ever was Field Day, now silent key Laurie N0EEC and I set up on the MN/ND/SD border for Saturday afternoon. Was kinda slow so we headed home to Minneapolis about dark, on the drive back the HF bands opened up and we were busy!

"when the bands are open" HiHi, especially when were out there operating, there open more often. Good to read that you had fun on field day.

I passed my Extra exam today. So for now my call sign is KC3ROR/AE. I don’t think they change your call sign unless you request it. As an Extra license holder, I could but that would make work for everyone else and I don’t see the need to flout my new status.

It only took me about four months of studying and two test attempts to get it. I’m glad that’s done!
