This is going to be one hell of a project, but I'm about to start prepping my '01 Ranger XLT for a built 460 Big Block that one of my racing buddies has laying around

Prep work suggestions? I have in my sights ladder bars and boxing the frame, but does anyone know the best way to prepare the truck for the raw HP and Torque?

Also, the AODE tranny links up without a problem right? I'd hate to do all of the mock ups to find out i need to go dumpster diving again...

Thanks for ya'll help and support ahead of time! :icon_thumby:

Well the BB swap has been done several times but never in a late model. All the "minor" things have been worked out with the early ones. Biggest problem in the later ones, even with a 351 is getting headers and working around the front suspension. Maybe a Mustang II? Just throwing it out there. Sure you're going to be having a lot of people follow this project, somebody has to be first.

yeah, i was worried about the header clearances in the bay. theres not that much room between the block and the steering column as it is with the 4.0l, so I'd hate to see what I'm working with on that situation. I'm trying to keep away from going through the tire well to get the proper clearances for the headers, but if it comes down to it I'll go that route.

Found a good reference photo of someone doing a 351 in a late model and fitting the headers in. I think he's using 1 3/4" tubing. It's just tight but if there is a will, there is a way.

you could always route the headers through the hood :)

Those look like they are all separately flanged to the engine, are they completely independent of each other, or do they slide over the column?
I was thinking about doing the headers segmented like that, but I was thinking that I was over complicating it by going that route

See, I was trying to keep mine in the frame to keep the look stock, but how much easier is it to go out of the frame than to tuck it all away?

dumb thought kinda, you could skip headers and use manifolds, would be much easier, but will starve some power...

put it in, make headers later, just make it work, just do it

the way im doing mine i think it will be way easier to go outside the frame, of course mine is a gen 2. i Think i have more room because you have IFS, i have no clue how much room you have to work with.

i dont think you could do anything to make a 460 look stock in a ranger lol.

In all honesty, that idea never crossed my mind. I may get a pair of back up manifolds in case the headers don't work out. That much closer to completion in my book :icon_thumby:

You're going to need a BB transmission and stiffer front springs.

I'm looking into a C6 or an E4OD transmission, but I'm having trouble finding them cheap.

In other news, what's the likelihood of someone trading their stiffer springs for both backseats (incl. seat belts) in the parts for sale forums?
