I don't think it is really heat coming off the trans so much. All the air that goes through the radiator and through the engine compartment in general can only really go under the truck once it hits the firewall. Open a window and you get a nice siphen action that sucks the hot air from under the truck and into the cab.
With just the side window down my truck is unbearable, with the rear window open too it must overwhelm the furnace in the tranny hump because then it isn't bad at all.
