Well I'm graduating college in 2 weeks, I have some money saved up, and before I lose my student discount with Snap-On I want to buy a good set of sockets. I am set on buying a full set of short and long 3/8 metric and standard but that only leaves me with enough money to buy 1 full set of 1/2" sockets. So I am thinking should I buy half a set of metric and half a set of standard or just a full set of metric.

I actually voted for short sockets but theres been a few times I'd wish I had long. But I really think you get more use out of short they'll fit in way more places. You just either half the buy the long ones individually as you need them like I do, or just pull out the trusty wrenches like I usually do too. I've got ratchet wrenches on my christmas list this year both standard and metric.

1/2" drive is just one of those things you just don't really use a lot of in the automotive industry hand tool wise...usually always using 3/8 drive and 1/4" stuff.

Now if you are talking impact sockets...then get the metric and standard deep sockets.

Ahh in all honesty your just buying a name. I buy all craftsmen I really think they have better quality than snap-on. Yea I know they also have lifetime warrenty but craftsmen are cheaper and they'll last forever. I've broken ratchets both brands I have no problem getting a replacement for craftsmen I go to the store and hand them the broken tool they go to the back and get another on I leave. Snap-on you half to wait on the truck on thursdays and you half to hassel with driver for a new one and I've been turned away.

I use a shit ton of 1/2 drive I only get around to 3/8s when I start working on things like the doors and interior stuff. If my 1/2 ratchet don't fit I usually pull out my wrenches.

Well I guess everyone is different. The only time I use 1/2" is impact sockets and if I'm using my big breaker bar to get something loose.

Other than that I've got my long handled Snap-On dual-80 bent handle flex head 3/8" drive ratchet in my hand most of the day. Oh and ratchet wrenches.....they are worth their weight in gold.

yep I can't wait to get mine, I need them so bad when I changed out the tranny on my wifes nephews legend. Getting to the half shaft and rear torque mount was a bitch I only had a inch and a half to get the wrech and my arm through and I could only do half turns at a time....
