Made a mock up of a bumper I'd like to build. Let me know what you guys think. I have a canopy on my truck so I think it will look pretty good. The spare carrier would swing out and lock at 90° and the holes on the ends are for lights.

Thanks man, I will. Thought about buying a bumper for a Toyota or Jeep and modifying it to bolt on where the hitch mounts and adding the tire carrier to that. Anybody used a 90's toyota bumper on a ranger before?

I revised the design some. Thoughts?

I want to make the tire mount removable. If I welded the spindle to a 1/4" plate and used 4 grade 8 bolts to bolt it to my bumper, would that be strong enough?

I would think so (maybe 1/2" bolts?), just make sure you brace it real good under there. That will put a lot of load on that area of the bumper, but a brace to the frame underneath will help a lot.

I was trying to keep the bumper bolt on as well.. I want the bumper to bolt on where the hitch is bolted now. Do you think an additional plate under the mount plus some gussets inside the bumper would be enough?

Since I'm already halfway there that looks like a great idea.

Yeah it sure did! All 4 of my vehicles have those plates. I don't know why Oregon has so many plates (Tree, Salmon, Wine Country, Crater lake, Pacific Wonderland.....)

Anyway, I saw this at Ruffstuff awhile back. Not sure if you can use it? http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=ruffstuff&Product_Code=STIRES&Category_Code=BUMPER
Hey thanks man! Have you used that one? There's alot out there. I want one that's plenty strong if I get bigger tires.

So I just discovered Google sketch up! In the process of designing the bumper now. I'm thinking about giving the plans to a shop and having them build the bumper and then I'll build the spare tire carrier myself. Anybody know roughly what a show would charge for something like that?

If your going to fab part of it just do it all. More fun to me building it myself. even if its not always perfect I can say i did it myself. I also like to build as I go. I have a basic design on things but usually modify it as i go to get the look or function i want.
