So, I have a 1990 Ranger 4x4 with the 4.0/auto and a couple years ago I started a rebuild on the top end of the motor then ran out of funds/time. My mom passed away and I moved a couple of towns over and the truck has just been sitting. I plan on moving somewhere soon that has a place where I can continue work on the truck. I have thought about a 302 or 351 build, but decided against it. I want to rebuild the 4.0 and swap in a 5 speed and want to do some upgrade to the v6 while I'm at it.

I have a few questions.

A turbo might come in to play at some point, are there any headers or manifolds for a turbo on these engines?

I want to do the comp 422 cam swap, what lifters/rockers/rods should I use?

Is it possible to do all of this and keep the stock heads and just port/polish them?

There are off-the-shelf superchargers for the 4.0l OHV
Yes, you can use the stock heads, boost effects the pistons and bottom end more

And there stroker kits for the 4.0l OHV

I include the "OHV" with the 4.0l because Ford now has the 4.0l SOHC, and when doing a search for parts and upgrades it will come up, these 2 engines are not related in anyway, but do have the same block bellhousing bolt pattern

Ok. Thanks for the Info. I have considered finding a sohc for the truck,but think I'll just stick with the ohv. I'd rather turbo than supercharge. I've just never really cared for superchargers too much. What would y'all recommend for a turbo/bov/and all the other good stuff?

Boost is boost, supercharger is less efficient than turbocharger, because it draws engine horse power to run it from belt system, turbo scavenges power from exhaust so not as much of a drain.

If you had endless room in the engine bay, then dual turbo would be the way to go.
But you don't.
Supercharger adds height which is limited in the Rangers but not as bad as the sides :)
Superchargers also don't have turbo-lag and they develop boost at lower RPMs

As said boost is boost, you are limited by the stock bottom end as far as the psi of boost you will use, some say no higher than 6psi, other say 10psi is OK, but it is your money on the line when a rod lets go, lol.

I have no problems upgrading the bottom end of the motor if needed.
