Brand new starter grinding on start. Engine starts every time but seems to slip/ not catch all the time.

1984 Ford Ranger 2.8L V6 5-Speed

So, Ive installed a brand new starter. The starter never name this sound until I had a really bad stalling issue where I had to crank my car over every time it would stall.

I never held the key tried cranking when it was running. The last time I started when the stalling issue was going on. It started making a horrible grinding sound.

Before that I could just hear the motor run and turn the engine over. Like its supposed to.

Im wondering wha the issue could be.

Is it the starter teeth, ring gear, or do I need to do the 10 tooth starter conversion?

The engine starts but it seems to hit the ring gear as if its turning engine over but takes a minute for it to catch.

If it's not broken Don't Fix It!
Sounds like it is time to pull the starter and look a the teeth of both the flywheel and the starter. If both are good this would more than likely point to a bad starter IMO.

Sounds like it is time to pull the starter and look a the teeth of both the flywheel and the starter. If both are good this would more than likely point to a bad starter IMO.

Teeth seem to look in good shape. Now it is time to bench test the starter. When doing so be sure to hang on to the starter, or strap it down, as it will try to twist and then bounce around. Listen for abnormal noises and watch the to see if the gear gets thrown out all the way. Test multiple times in a row.

So How would you suggest Id bench test it? Ive never done it before.....

I daily my truck and its around 2:32AM here. So I reinstalled the starter and hopefully it just needed to realined. I need to drive it to work tomorrow.

Jumper cables. Ground the case and then tap the positive cable to the main lug and see if the bendix is working properly.

When the truck has free down time this is the time to bench test it. A set of jumper cables and a wire or 2 will be enough to bench test it with your battery. I'll try and find a vid and or instructions and link them here for you to look over.

if you have a bench a ratchet strap or just hold on to it with your free hand tight. It will kick but wont hurt you. it is the torque of the armature and gear spinning that will make it move.

if you have a bench a ratchet strap or just hold on to it with your free hand tight. It will kick but wont hurt you. it is the torque of the armature and gear spinning that will make it move.
Ive heard that torque can cause the starter to move away from the ring gear and cause the issue ive been having but idk if Im having that issue with my truck's starter

Most likely not with the bolts being tight, You mentioned you went over them again and made sure, unless the starter housing is made of inferior materials, less than OEM specs strength.
