Brake line Flaring

I know this is the cheap way, but I'm replacing my left rear brake cylinder. The line going in did not come off like expected. I cut the line about 8 inches from the cylinder. Going to have Auto store cut new line and flare that end for me.

I have a flare kit. Is it possible for me to flare the end still on the truck?

97 Ranger 4x4. I think its 3/16 line

On vehicle flaring is dicey. If you have a hydraulic flare unit like the Master cool on then yes, it can be done easy enough. If you have a manual one with the bar and horse shoe I have had no luck making a good flare with those on vehicle, mostly because you are supposed to have the bar in a vice.

Those are the only two ways I know of.

What you should have done, when you realized the fitting was stuck to the line is unbolt the wheel cylinder from the backing plate and spin it off the line.

I know. I screwed that up. I am going to try to flare on the truck. Worst case I replace the back line running between the back wheel cylinders. This is a 97 Ranger with 270,000 on it. I try to things as cheap as possible to keep the wife happy.

I just flared a line on the truck a couple weeks ago when I was replacing the RABS hydraulic unit and had to cut the line to get the old one off. I just got the tool from Autozone and although it took two tries, it did work.

That little drop of brake fluid on the flaring tool to lube it is what made my second try work well.

Instead of flaring on truck, I splurged and spent the extra $8 and replaced the rear line from wheel cylinder to differential.

Being a 97 with almost 270,000, I'm sure the other half of the rear brakes is next.
