Hi I’m new to this forum group and was looking to get some help, I have a 1994 Ford Ranger 4.0 Automatic that I am currently boosting. I have a 79mm turbo on her and need help with some computer recommendations. My buddy has a similar setup but a 52mm turbo and only is making 4psi on a stock computer. I keep seeing the sct and jet chips. Do you guys believe one of those would help my case? I just need a computer that will not blow my poor lil semi built 4.0.
THANKS!

My credo
Its probably better to be self deprecating than self defecating.
Chips do squat.

Go tweecer or megasquirt.

Tweecer, Megasquirt, Holley…

The stock computers don’t really have a lot to offer. Might be able to get away with a Quarter Horse tuner on the stock computer, but chips mostly aren’t going to really do the trick. Plus age of electronics is starting to get to the stock computers from my understanding. Better to just ditch it and go with something modern to fix it all in one go.

The 94 is still obd1, which means that you have to program a chip and then piggyback that onto the pcm to update the engine software. That is fairly limited in terms of what you can modify and control. In fact, even on my 09 with obd2 and an SCT tuner, they have not unlocked any transmission control features, so I cannot modify the way the trans shifts.

So, I will echo what has been said above - you are going to be best with an aftermarket controller and a fully custom tune. That most likely means you need to find a reputable tuning shop because most people do not have the knowledge or skill to tune the computer themselves.
