Hello all, I have a question about in-car microphones I'm hoping someone can help me with. I have a JVC head unit that is bluetooth capable. Do I have to use a microphone specifically for this application, or can I use any 3.5 mm microphone that will plug in? I ask because my car had this head unit in it when I got it, but no microphone, so I plugged in the cheap little mic I have for my laptop into the microphone port. I have the unit paired with my phone, and I can hear people talking when I call them, but they can't hear me.

Yes, any mic "should work".
Some manufacturers use their own mic specs, so you have to buy parts from them.

If the "head unit" has a model number or brand name look that up, if its factory or dealer installed call a dealer for specs

Whew, what a long weekend so far. I need another day to get stuff done. But anyway, I pulled the unit out of my dash and my model number is KD-R800. What I need to know, I guess, is it broken, or will buying a special $30 microphone make it work?

I did adjust mic volume. It only has three settings. And I'm assuming the 3.5 mm pink connector in the back labeled "MIC" is the microphone input. I did a little more searching, the actual JVC microphone for this unit is like $75! There are some cheaper aftermarket ones, but I really want to know if I need to spend that kind of money to make it work, or what?

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind, but I've always been leary of buying cheap electronics off of ebay.

I've used alternate microphones with JVC radios in the past and it's worked just fine. We have an Olympus ME-15 in the company work truck hooked into a JVC KW-XR810. Hope that helps.
