Personally when I convert from 7.5 axle to explorer 8.8 incorporating the sway bar at same time, and due to where I work getting some air bags off of one of the wrecked semi's and also installing on rear. Sorry, all I can offer.

Would the Explorer rear end work on an 88?

tech library covers this... you have to swap the spring perch to top and weld on shock tabs.

the 4.0 ranger in 94 has a 8.8 no need for the exploder rear. swap in a decent posi like one from a mustang. maybe a 355 373 gear. swaybars, springs, some good new shocks if yours havent been changed. new bushings, maybe the high dollar neopreen? ones... this should get you started
hope this helps

edit; just seen ur sig. you already have the posi and gears. try the rest out.

My credo
I didn't ask for your life story, just answer the question!
I went down the same road years ago. Here's what i did:

'99 Cobra wheels (17x8) with 245/45ZR17 tires.
3-4 drop (dream beams and flip kit) W/ new shocks.
'89 STX 4x4 front sway bar (I dont remember what size it was, but I think it was 1.25").
90 BII rear sway bar (1").
Poly bushings.

I cant tell you what the best mod was, I did it all at the same time. I can tell you there was a HUGE, HUGE difference.
