In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
It might be wise to say which transmission it is.

The M5OD does not have a removable bellhousing. Someone may have the transmission you need, without realizing that what they have will fit your engine. If I read the tech article properly, you either have an FM132 (2wd) or FM146(4x4)

Also, if I was you and needed a bellhousing, since you most likely have a FM-146, I would take a look around and see if you can find a M5OD out of a 4.0 Ranger, it’s a stronger transmission and a common upgrade. When the FM-146 in my Choptop goes (or I get around to tracking down a M5OD), it’s getting upgraded. Your transfer case will bolt up if it’s 4x4 but the transfer case shifter I think is different if you have a manual case. If you have a 2wd or an electric transfer case, then that doesn’t matter.

I think you have a Mitsubishi transmission because that is the only one where the bellhousing unbolts? Here are some places in Ca that say they have one.

Snowman, If you have an 88 or later manual it is an FM146.

88 to when? I am having a hard time finding a bell housing. Most of the salvage places I can find, do not really get back to me.
Thanks,

Thanks,
89 or maybe 90. And only 2.9 powered trucks. 2.3, 3.0, 4.0 all had Mazda transmissions.

You actually can go back as far as '86 but you will need a different slave cylinder and hose. '88 and '89 had a quick connect slave cylinder fitting... 86-87 had a hose that is held in with a hitch pin.

An M5OD Mazda transmission from a 90 up Ranger or Explorer with a 4.0 is also an option but you will need to have the transfer case shifter with that setup unless you have electronic 4wd.
