OK. Been doing some more research. Is the M5OD and M5R1 the same trans? I keep seeing those two models interchanged.

If that is the case. Are all M5R1 4WD Transmissions the same?

M5OD is a base model number
M5OD-R2 was larger version used mostly with V8 engines
M5OD-R1 was the smaller version used with 4cyl or V6 engines, so Rangers

Its common to abbreviate each version as M5R2 or M5R1

These were unique in that the Bell housing was part of the main transmission housing, can't be removed
This means each M5R1(or R2) is made for a specific engine
There were 4 M5R1 engine versions
4cyl SOHC Lima engines
2.3l DOHC Duratec engines
3.0l V6 Vulcan engines
These 3 versions used same gear ratios

4th version used different gear ratios and fit 2.9l, 4.0l OHV and 4.0l SOHC engines

The 4cyl Lima, 3.0l Vulcan, and 2.9l/4.0l versions also came in 2WD or 4WD versions
2.3l DOHC never had a 4WD version

So overall there were 7 versions of the M5R1
There are no different numbers for these, all would be listed as M5OD-R1(M5R1)
So a used model would need to be listed by engine type and 2WD or 4WD, to find out what it fits

There was an M5OD-R1HD
It was only used on 4.0l SOHC engines, in both 2WD and 4WD versions, same as the 2.9l or 4.0l OHV M5R1, interchangeable, internally the same just had and extra bolt hole on bell housing

The M5R1s for 2WD didn't have a speedometer cable hook up from 1998 and up
4WD versions never had speedometer cable hook up, it was on transfer case thru 1997, but gone 1998 and up

Thanks for the details. I'm just trying to make sure I order the correct one for my application. I don't want to deal with having to return a transmission.

This is what I'm looking at

@lowsinthe20s ,

The engines for 94, there are 2 systems, one with EGR and one without it. These differences effect both the wiring and the fuel delivery. I strongly recommend getting either a 93 or 94 ECU that is correct to your engine (with/without EGR) as your end fuel economy is in the balance.

The auto/manual is nearly unimportant, using a manual transmission.

Yes, that is the one for a 4.0l engine and 4WD drivetrain in your B2 4.0l

Transmission ordered.

I also found a 94 manual ECU with EGR.

Any recommendations on what kind of clutch I should go with?

Think someone told me Luk is also factory Ford, want to say that’s what came out of my F-150 when I had to replace a smoked clutch at 70k (I bought it at 69k, and it was going then). For some reason I seem to remember finding LUK stamped on clutch kits from Autozone before too. That’s what’s in the choptop, a 4.0 Autozone clutch. F-150 I don’t remember the brand, but it might have been LUK, but I do remember that it’s not a stock clutch, but stage 2 racing clutch which works more like and on/off switch. I do not recommend doing that on a stock motor, it takes a certain finesse to drive. Because that particular truck has a 300-6, ZF5, rear locker and nice fat grippy 31x10.50-15 tires, it’s always looking for the weakest link. But it’s great for what I use it for.

Anyone know if the 94 4.0 has a camshaft synchronizer tool. I can't seem to find it for the early 4.0 models. The book calls out a part number and I look that up (t89p-12200-a) and it says its for a 3.8 v6. There is a tool for the 95-04 models, but I'm not finding anything on the 91-94.

Thanks again.

Question on the wiring.

I have taken everything out of the engine bay. Do I need any wiring passed the bulk head on the drivers side? I'm not using the Explorer Dash.

I also read somewhere that the headlight wiring will not work for the B2. I'm not sure if that was for the pre 89 models or not. Wiring appears to be the same on the B2. Can anyone confirm that? Thank you
