Im new to the thread. I have a 94 ranger 4.0 with the a4ld transmission. I want to manual swap it so I'm looking for a cheap parts truck. My question is what is the different years can I get that will bolt straight up and plug straight up? Any information will help. Thanks

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
1994 might be tricky. i would assume 93-95 are all the same.. there are several bracket and column pass thru scenario changes along with later airbag stuff ect... from 1988-2011.... dash modularization and hvac upgrades to allow for the v8 in the explorer in 95. the ranger got it at a different point.

i have used 94 pedal assembly in a 90 truck. had to make a few tabs for wiring ect... but lower column differences in the later trucks kept us from using an earlier column...i dont remember the years but they were mid 90s and up...doing a 4x4 conversion and auto to manual on a 2004 model trying to use an earlier all mechanical setup....speedo and simpler wiring...turn signals ect...

Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
I'm thinking that the safest bet would be a 1993 or 1994 donor.

1995 changed to OBD2 (likely wiring differences), and also introduced the driver's side airbag with the completely redesigned dash (manual column and pedals may not directly interchange).

I'd be more optimistic about parts from the second generation years (1989 to 1992) versus '95 and up. !989 thru 1994 uses the same dash design, and I think the '90 model was the first year for the 4.0.

You may not mind just removing (or ignoring) the auto shifter, but to do the swap cleanly you'll need a column swap, or a rebuild with the manual parts.

A same year, same motor donor truck would give you everything needed, including the ECM.

If you want one truck for everything, plus random spare parts, you need '93 or '94.

Pedals swap as far back as '91, possibly '89. '95+ pedals do not work. '92-down you'll be able to use some parts, but not others. The master cylinder is supposed to be different, for example.

Will the trans from a 3.0 bolt up to a 4.0?
